Funds are generated through Capitals ticket sales with a portion of the proceeds donated back to the club or team that buys them. Amateur hockey teams can also become eligible to get "Coached by a Cap" when they buy a minimum of 30 tickets through this program. Each month from October through February, two teams will be selected and assigned a Caps player who will "coach" their team. The Caps player will then attend one practice for the winning team, where he will skate with the players, demonstrate skills, answer questions and sign autographs. Teams of all ages in the Washington DC metropolitan area are encouraged to enter. Once a team enters they are eligible to be selected for the duration of the program.
